10 Movies like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani that Are Complete Family Entertainers

With Karan Johar successfully bringing back family drama in Hindi movies, here are 10 movies like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani that you will absolutely enjoy watching with your family. The new movie is being loved by the audiences and features Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in lead roles. The cast also includes Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog and Dharmendra.

With family comes drama and entertainment. In this article, we will talk about movies that are family entertainers as well as those that deal with families. Both of these can be exclusive of each other, but the one thing that they share is that viewers can watch them all with their families on a Sunday afternoon while relishing lunch. So let’s begin.

10 Movies like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

Bareilly Ki Barfi

Starring Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon and Ayushmann Khurrana, Bareilly Ki Barfi is about Bitti (Sanon), who runs away from her umpteenth arranged marriage. While waiting at the train station, she comes across a book named “Bareilly Ki Barfi” whose protagonist she finds is completely like her. She tracks down the publisher Chirag (Kurrana) who tells her that the author Pritam Vidrohi (Rao) lives in a different city. The truth is that Chirag is the one who wrote the novel using the name of Pritam, his friend, as the alias.

I won’t spoil the movie for you anymore but urge you to watch it. The three leads have established themselves as the top-tier actors in Bollywood right now and this movie is a testimony to their skills to evoke humour just by the way they carry themselves and imbibe the characters.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Directed by Aditya Chopra, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi tells the tale of Surinder who meets Tani on her wedding day and falls in love with her. Unfortunately, her husband passes away in an accident on the same day and she is married to Surinder by her father who likes Surinder a lot. What follows is how Surinder undergoes a complete makeover to impress Tani and becomes Raj, a “macho” guy.

With Shah Rukh Khan as Surinder and Anushka Sharma as Tani, the movie was a blockbuster when it was released and is an outright family entertainer. It is also one of the few roles wherein SRK gives us a look at his ability to pull off humour while maintaining a character that is devoid of it. The movie was Anushka’s debut in Bollywood.

Chup Chup Ke

A Priyadarshan directorial, Chup Chup Ke is a laughter riot. Featuring the best-in-business actors, including Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Suniel Shetty, it tells the story of Jeetu (Shahid), who fakes his death by jumping into the sea to clear his debts with the insurance money. Fishermen Gundya and Bandya, Rawal and Yadav, respectively, find Jeetu entangled in their net and bring him to a hospital. But Jeetu pretends to be a deaf mute to avoid letting anyone find out his real identity. The confusion, chaos and comedy that follows make this movie a must-watch for people of all ages.

Dil Dhadakne Do

A showcasing of higher class society, Dil Dhadakne Do explores the complexities of an affluent business family whose each member has his or her own personal struggles. What makes things even more complex are their professional relationships and friendships that often exchange their positions, leading to a world where one has trouble differentiating between real and pretence to the point of being weird. This weirdness is pointed at in an apt manner by using a dog as the plot’s facilitator.

This movie is on the more serious side of a family entertainer as it doesn’t so much entertain you as it affects you. It has been directed by Zoya Akhtar. The movie stars Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.

Piku

A family entertainer need not be one that offers a spread of family members. Piku deals with an independent daughter’s relationship with her pettish and obstinate yet loving-aged father. With Deepika Padukone as Piku Bannerjee and Amitabh Bachchan as her father, Bhaskor Bannerjee, the movie is, in my humble opinion, the best in this list and deserves to rank among the top five in any list of family entertainer movies. Their chemistry is bang-on, and the emotional angle that director Shoojit Sircar is able to portray on screen is adorable.  Honourable mention- Irrfan Khan plays the role of Rana Chaudhary who owns a taxi business.

The movie explores the journey of the father-daughter relationship and manifests this in the form of a literal journey that they make from Delhi to their ancestral home in Kolkata accompanied by Rana who drives the car. I can go on talking about it but I don’t want to because I want you to see it to feel it. Have fun.

The Blind Side

From Bollywood, we are now shifting to Hollywood, and we begin with The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock. It is a biographical drama based on the life of Michael Oher, who spent his childhood in and out of foster care until being adopted by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy (who later became his legal guardians). Oher would go on to play in the NFL (America’s National Football League). The way his adoption transformed his life along with that of the Tuohys is what the movie deals with.

The movie stars Quinton Aaron as Oher, along with Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy and Tim McGraw as Sean Tuohy. Bullock received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award, all three as the best actress for her role. In as few words as possible, the movie proves big time that family is beyond blood.

ET the Extra Terrestrial

Written by Melissa Mathison and Directed by Steven Spielberg, ET the Extra Terrestrial is a science fiction movie that easily qualifies as not just a family entertainer but one that explains what it means to be family. Elliott comes across a stranded alien and befriends it, calling it E.T. He even introduces it to his siblings, who agree to keep E.T. a secret. Unfortunately, the government finds out about it soon enough, and it seems to be only a matter of time before E.T. is taken from those who have become its family on Earth.

A beautiful and emotional ride, the movie is a classic and undoubtedly one of the best family entertainers ever made. It stars Henry Thomas as Elliot, along with Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore as Elliot’s siblings Michael and Gertie, respectively.

Mrs Doubtfire

Watch this one if you haven’t already. Starring the great Robin Williams as the titular character, Mrs Doubtfire is about divorced Daniel Hillard, who disguises himself as an old British lady and convinces his ex-wife (Miranda, played by Sally Field) to hire him as a nanny so that he can spend time with his kids. The result is a hilarious story that smoothly brings together the themes of marriage, separation and its effects on kids, and the importance of being together. The movie has been directed by Chris Columbus.

The Lion King

Adapted from its animated counterpart (of 1994) that is based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, The Lion King (2019) tells the story of Simba, who is banished from his home after being convicted of his father, King Mufasa’s death by Mufasa’s younger brother Scar. How Simba finds his way back and claims his rightful throne by killing Scar, who is the one to have killed Mufasa in the first place, is what the movie is all about.

One of Disney’s greatest movies of all time, if not the greatest, it is a visual treat that is sure to appeal to people of all ages. On a personal note, this movie also shows how family, and the emotions that are attached to it, transcend species. And it is not just due to the movie that I say this but because of the countless times I have seen wildlife on television. The way animals protect their family is something that I’m sure you also know about. The Lion King only gives them voices. The actors who have given their voices include James Earl Jones, Alfre Woodard, Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner.

Baby’s Day Out

Releasing in the same year as Disney’s The Lion King i.e. 1994, Baby’s Day Out is literally what the title means. It is a movie about a baby who goes about exploring the city of Chicago on his own after escaping from a bunch of clumsy kidnappers. How they try to get him back and how they fail every time make the movie a cult classic.

What’s shocking is that when it was released, it was a flop. Today, it is one of hailed as one of the greatest movies ever made, that too around a baby. So if you have babies or even little kids, show them this movie today. Do it. It has been directed by Patrick Read Johnson.
